The Student Radio Network (SRN) of Aotearoa New Zealand is proud to announce the return of the SRN Awards for 2023. The combined power of all five student radio stations across the motu represent the heart and soul of Aotearoa New Zealand’s contemporary, alternative music culture and community. Championing the independent and alternative, the network represents audiences from 95bFM in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, Radio Control 99.4FM in Te Papaioea Palmerston North, RadioActive 88.6FM in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington, RDU 98.5FM in Ōtautahi Christchurch, and Radio One 91FM in Ōtepoti Dunedin.
Presented by NZ On Air and with incredible support from our sponsors, the 2023 SRN Awards will celebrate the musicians, broadcasters, and volunteers who breathe life into our stations.
The event will be streamed live and simulcast on all five SRN stations across Aotearoa New Zealand. The main ceremony will be held in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington by Radio Active at the Massey University Tea Gardens. The awards will kick off at 7pm Saturday 4 November can be watched live via the SRN Youtube channel. There will be regional watch parties in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland (95bFM), Te Papaioea Palmerston North (Radio Control), Ōtautahi Christchurch (RDU), and Ōtepoti Dunedin (Radio One 91FM).
Radio Active Station Manager Jen Kyle said she is “so proud to be hosting this year and can’t wait to celebrate another year of amazing music and the hard mahi of the SRN. Bring on November 4th!” Station Manager for RDU James Meharry echoed those sentiments; “RDU is hyped about celebrating this year - and the range of awards says it all. Student Radio: you can listen to it… but you can't touch it.” Speaking about this year’s awards, Michael Tile Vamaua of Palmerston North’s Radio Control says "We can't wait to celebrate our insanely talented local musicians and AMAZING volunteers... the lifeblood of Control!"
95bFM General Manager Tom Tremewan concludes that “the mighty morphin Voltron that is the combined power of Aotearoa New Zealand’s student radio stations is an unparalleled hotbed of talent teeming with our country’s new generation of broadcasting superstars. The SRN is also excited to announce the 2023 SRN People’s Choice Award, Te Tohu Kōwhitinga Tāngata, brought to you by MAS - Medical Assurance Society.
This award is for the people - by the people. Music fans have the opportunity to select and vote for their favourite musician/band of 2023 from a list compiled of artists who had a track playlisted on at least 3 of the the SRN stations (Radio One, RDU, Radio Active, Radio Control, or 95bFM) between 1 Nov 2022 - 29 Sep 2023. Voting closes at 12:00am on October 30. We'll compile the votes, and the winner will be announced on the night.
