2022 Student Radio Network Awards Winners announced

November 21, 2021: On Saturday evening the Student Radio Network (95bFM, Radio Control 99.4FM, Radio Active 88.6FM, RDU 98.5FM, and Radio One 91FM) celebrated their own with the 2022 Student Radio Network Awards. With funding from NZ On Air, the network honored the musicians, broadcasters and volunteers who breathe life into their stations.

Hosted by Radio One’s Hannah Williams and Sunaina Born, the awards were live in five locations around Aotearoa, live streamed as well as simulcast on all partnered stations. The awards featured performances from the 2021 winners Amamelia and Dartz, and had appearances from creatives like Sports Team, Chabs & Milky, Johanna Cosgrove, the Department of Information, Vanessa Cone, Night Lunch and Coconut Crabs.

Fazerdaze, Mokotron, The Big Fresh Collective, Rubi Du, Hans Pucket, How Get, Te KuraHuia and Creative Sounds Society - The Stomach all took home national awards throughout the evening. The diversity in the winners showcases the network's piecemeal approach to genre and fully displays the breadth and depth of local talent that engages with the network.

The eight national awards were decided by the Programme Directors from each Student Radio Network station. This included: Vince Wyinn and Aneeka Moheed from 95bFM, Fi Carr of Radio Control, Harri Robinson of Radio Active, Jamie Stratton of RDU and Dave Borrie of Radio One 91FM.

The results are:

Fazerdaze's 'Come Apart' won Te Tōtahi Toa, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Independent Music New Zealand (Favourite Single brought to you by Independent Music New Zealand).

Mokotron’s 'TAWHITO' won Te Tohu Hopunga Puoro Mariu, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Recorded Music NZ (Favourite EP / Mixtape brought to you with help from Recorded Music NZ).

The Big Fresh Collective’s 'FOOTMAHI 2022' won Te Tohu Kohinga Mariu, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā APRA AMCOS NZ (Favourite Album brought to you by APRA AMCOS).

Rubi Du won the Te Tohu Kaipuoro Toa (Favourite Solo Act).

Hans Pucket won Te Rōpū Mariu, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā RE Burger, (Favourite Group brought to you by RE Burger).

How Get’s 'Te Tai Pari' won Te Tohu Puoro o te reo Māori, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Te Māngai Pāho (Favourite Song featuring Te Reo Māori, brought to you by Te Māngai Pāho).

Creative Sounds Society - The Stomach were honored with the He Tohu Kahurangi, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Te Reo Reka o Aotearoa (Outstanding Achievement Award, brought to you by NZ Music Commission).

Throughout October and November the audience of the Student Radio Network voted and Te KuraHuia as the winner of Te Tohu Kōwhitinga Tāngata, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Toi Rauwhārangi, Te Kūnenga ki Pūrehuroa (the People's Choice Award, brought to you by College of Creative Arts, Massey University).

A high point of the evening was the Te Whiringa Toa 2022 ki a Te Pou Hononga, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Audioculture (2022 SRN Top 10, brought to you by AudioCulture). The Student Radio Network compiled their weekly Top 10 lists from throughout 2022, creating a master list that documents the favourite songs from the last calendar year.

The 2022 Student Radio Network Awards begun by celebrating each station individually, spotlighting the flaxroots that the network is built on.

The Station Manager from 95bFM, Radio Control, Radio Active, RDU, and Radio One 91FM were tasked to choose the winner of the He Tohu Kairangi (Outstanding Contribution Award), with the intention of highlighting someone who had gone above and beyond for the station in the last year.

They chose:

  • Corey Fuimaono - Te Tohu Kairangi ki a 95bFM, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Oatly (Outstanding Contribution to 95bFM brought to you by Oatly).
  • Murray Shaw (The Swamprock Show) - He Tohu Kairangi ki a Radio Control, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Te Rōpū Tauira o te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa (Outstanding Contribution to Radio Control, brought to you by Massey University Students’ Association).
  • Lexi Mills - He Tohu Kairangi ki a Radio Active, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Parrotdog Bar (Outstanding Contribution to Radio Active brought to you by Parrotdog Bar).
  • Ben Sinclair - He Tohu Kairangi ki a RDU, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā THREE BOYS Brewery (Outstanding Contribution to RDU brought to you by THREE BOYS Brewery).
  • Candice Clark - He Tohu Kairangi ki a Radio One 91FM, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā OUSA (Outstanding Contribution to Radio One 91FM, brought to you by Otago University Students’ Association).

In 2022 the Student Radio Network introduced a new award, He Tohu Kahurangi o te Pāhotanga (Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting), to celebrate the journalism and on-air expertise that happens on their airwaves.

They chose:

  • Christina Huang and Casper McGuire - Dear Science with Dr Joel Rindelaub and Professor Alan Blackman (Wire segment) - He Tohu Kahurangi o te Pāhotanga ki a 95bFM (95bFM's Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting).
  • Tiny Club Takeover - He Tohu Kahurangi o te Pāhotanga ki a Radio Control, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Te Rōpū Tauira o te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa (Radio Control's Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting, brought to you by the Massey University Students’ Association).
  • Active Live - He Tohu Kahurangi o te Pāhotanga ki a Radio Active i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Flying Nun (Radio Active's Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting brought to you by Flying Nun).
  • Kate Weith (RDU #45 Boosted Campaign) - He Tohu Kahurangi o te Pāhotanga ki a RDU, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā UCSA (RDU's Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting brought to you by University of Canterbury Students' Association).
  • Quintin Jane - Investigation into Edinburgh Realty - He Tohu Kahurangi o te Pāhotanga ki a Radio One 91FM, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā OUSA (Radio One 91FM's Outstanding Achievement in Broadcasting, brought to you by the Otago University Students’ Association).

The DJs, staff and volunteers from 95bFM, Radio Control, Radio Active, RDU, and Radio One 91FM, voted for their favourite song from their region, released between November 1, 2021 - September 29, 2022.

They winners are:

  • Half Hexagon’s Ism was chosen as Te Waiata Mariu 2022 ki a 95bFM, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Progear (95bFM's Favourite Song of 2022, brought to you by Progear).
  • Cones’ Cone Creek was chosen as Te Waiata Mariu 2022, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Te Rōpū Tauira o te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa (Radio Control's Favourite Song of 2022 brought to you by Massey University Students’ Association).
  • Clear Path Ensemble’s Absolvo was chosen as Te Waiata Mariu 2022 ki a Radio Active, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā Hills Hats (Radio Active's Favourite Song of 2022 brought to you by Hills Hats).
  • Violet French and The Horrible’s Pop Pop Pop was chosen as Te Waiata Mariu 2022 ki a RDU, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā MAINZ (RDU's Favourite Song of 2022 brought to you by MAINZ).
  • L Hotel’s See You Later (Suzy Cato Cover) was chosen as Te Waiata Mariu 2022 ki a Radio One 91FM, i kawea mai ki a koutou nā OUSA (Radio One 91FM's Favourite Song of 2022, brought to you by the Otago University Students’ Association).

The Student Radio Network Awards were produced by Naked PR. All artwork and design was created by Anns Taylor. Trophies were designed by ceramicist Devon Anna Smith. Skyla Anderson acted as the Student Radio Network Awards' Mātanga Reo and Te Wharau Walker performed the Mihi Whakatau to begin proceedings. Dunedin stage dressing and projections were created by Erica Sklenars, and production was handled by Gravity Productions.
